The North Carolina Democratic Party is pleased to announce it is accepting applications for its Spring 2018 class of Goodwin Fellows. Being a Goodwin Fellow prepares students and young adults an opportunity to acquire in-depth knowledge of political campaigns, business operations, communications strategy, and state-of-the-art data tools used in the field.
Goodwin Fellows will be trained by recognized leaders in the North Carolina Democratic Party and will have several opportunities to meet elected officials across the state. Because of the interest in the program, those interested are encouraged to submit an application and will be considered after an interview and selection process. Opportunities are available in the following fields: Finance, Political, Data, Research/Communications, and Digital. Please indicate what field you are intersted in when you apply, we will keep these prefrences in mind but placement in your top field is not guarenteed.

Finance
The North Carolina Democratic Party Finance Department raises the funds that are essential to maintaining and expanding the North Carolina Democratic Party, as well as fueling Democratic Party activities in all 100 counties. The resources raised by the this department help Democratic incumbents and challengers win races at the federal, state and municipal levels. This department also plans and executes high-dollar fundraising events throughout North Carolina.
Examples of daily tasks include managing the donor acknowledgement process, call-time management (working with the Chair of the Party to execute call-time), donor prospect research, database management, planning and promoting upcoming events, processing contributions, soliciting contributions, writing digital and print copy, as well as other administrative tasks. Through their duties, fellows will have the opportunity to work day to day with state political operatives, as well as the chance to network with leaders in the political field – including past and present elected officials and candidates for political office.
Finance interns are smart, accountable, energetic, and fun people who are interested in gaining practical experience and involvement in politics. The most successful candidates are self-starters with “can do” attitudes, the ability to learn quickly, and the ability to work independently. Attention to detail, excellent writing skills, strong interpersonal skills, familiarity with Word, Excel and Outlook are highly desired. The ideal candidate will have taken coursework with an emphasis on campaign finance/political science.
Political
The Political Department develops and implements the coordinated campaign strategy on behalf of the NCDP with Democratic candidates at federal, state and local levels. The political department also coordinates the interaction between the Party, county parties and chairs, precincts and their chairs, and allied organizations.
Political Goodwin Fellows can expect to assist in these processes by preparing briefs and memos for principal travel and events and conducting intensive research on a variety of projects, in addition to providing staff with full office support.
Data
The Data Department provides the NCDP with data-driven solutions to high-level strategic and operational problems. Data Goodwin Fellows are exposed to the next, newest, and greatest advancements in political technology.
Fellows will be asked to take on special projects for various teams in the Data department and, from time-to- time, other departments of the NCDP. Each fellowship will be uniquely tailored to the skill-set of the individual selected, but will be designed to enhance each intern’s understanding of the critical strategic role that data plays in every facet of the political process.
NCDP’s Break the Majority Communications and Research Goodwin Fellow
The Communications and Research Departments facilitate the NCDP’s interaction with the public and produces public research for the purpose of breaking the super majority in the North Carolina State Legislature.
Using traditional methods of communication (e.g. press releases and media events) in combination with new media tools (e.g. website content and online tools), the fellow will work to promote the NCDP’s message and provide support to our counties parties, Democratic candidates and officeholders, and activist.
Fellows can expect to assist in these processes by media monitoring, list building and maintenance, drafting written materials, and assisting with general communications needs.
Fellows will also work to produce research from a variety of sources to create NCDP research materials and support communication materials. Using public information such as campaign finance reports, lobbying reports, and county records, fellows will contribute to research for specific materials for Democratic candidates and officeholders, and activists.
Fellows can expect to assist in vetting potential municipal and state candidates, contribute to research books, and analyze data from various sources to forward the NCDP’s Break the Majority program.
Digital
Through our program, you will be exposed to a variety of skill areas, including digital content creation, social media, online fundraising, graphic design, and political campaigns. Goodwin Fellows will work alongside the NCDP Digital Associate and will have access to training materials provided by the Democratic National Committee. Interns will leave this program with transferable skills that are attractive in political, non- profit, or advocacy organizations.
Students with a working knowledge of digital communications, graphic design, media production, and journalism are encouraged to apply. Having a basic understanding of Photoshop is a plus.
The Digital Goodwin Fellow will gain experience in Adobe programs, work with NCDP staff to achieve digital goals, engage online supporters by assisting the creation of content for NCDP’s social media accounts and email programs, and monitor news outlets for news and messaging opportunities.
Our Digital fellow must be self-motivated, a team player, reliable, and interested in gaining digital experience in the nonprofit world. The intern must be able to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.
